How a 21-Year-Old Turned Pitching Into a Duel

In an era when pitchers were generally expected to supply a hittable underhand delivery and let batting, running, and fielding decide the game, Creighton tried to prevent solid contact. Why Jim Creighton qualifies as a pitching pioneer
Early baseball did not assign the pitcher the same strategic role the position holds today. The delivery was meant to begin the action, not dominate it. Creighton challenged that understanding by making the ball difficult to hit.
Atlantics captain Pete O’Brien later described Creighton’s delivery as low and swift, while other accounts emphasized his command, deceptive motion, and movement described as spin or “twist.” Historian John Thorn places those qualities at the center of Creighton’s importance: he combined speed, control, and movement in a way that helped redefine the contest between pitcher and batter (John Thorn’s history of Creighton as an early pitching innovator).

That strategic change is Creighton’s strongest claim to pioneering status. “First modern pitcher” can be useful shorthand, but it risks making nineteenth-century baseball sound more like the present game than it was. “First superstar” is a characterization, not a measurable title. “Inventor of the curveball” asks period descriptions to prove more than they can.
Nor should Creighton’s performance be compared directly with that of a modern pitcher. The delivery rules, pitching distance, equipment, scoring conditions, defensive practices, and completeness of the records were fundamentally different. His significance lies not in a modern-style statistical ranking but in what his contemporaries thought a pitcher was supposed to do before and after facing him.
The rules he challenged—and the unresolved question of legality
The rules must come before the mechanics. Creighton delivered underhand from a line roughly 45 feet from home plate, at a time when pitching restrictions prohibited whipping motions and required a straight wrist and elbow. Called strikes had appeared in 1858, before Creighton reached the height of his fame; called balls followed six years later. That chronology rules out the simple story that Creighton personally invented the strike zone. His success instead belonged to a broader shift toward regulating an increasingly adversarial pitcher-batter contest.
Thorn’s interpretation is that Creighton concealed a subtle wrist snap inside an apparently underhand motion, thereby generating more speed and movement than batters expected. Opponents alleged that such wrist or added arm action violated the intended restrictions.
Yet complaints do not settle the issue. Historian Thomas Gilbert’s research says that Henry Chadwick observed Creighton’s delivery in 1860 and pronounced it legal. Pete O’Brien, captain of the rival Atlantics, was likewise reported to have considered the delivery unhittable but legal. The conflicting assessments may reflect different vantage points, inconsistent enforcement, or uncertainty over where a forceful legal delivery ended and a prohibited motion began.
A definitive verdict—legal or illegal—is therefore impossible. The most responsible conclusion is that Creighton operated near a poorly defined boundary and gained an advantage that some opponents considered illegitimate.
His success may have intensified pressure to clarify the relationship among pitcher, batter, and umpire. It does not follow that one player alone caused a particular rule change. Called strikes preceded his peak, while called balls and the formal strike zone emerged through a longer process.
What Creighton may have thrown—and what cannot be reconstructed
O’Brien remembered a low, swift delivery whose path appeared to rise past the batter’s shoulder toward the catcher. Other accounts emphasized Creighton’s control, spin, and “twist.” Together, those descriptions show that hitters encountered speed and movement they found unfamiliar.
Historian Thomas Gilbert interprets the language and surviving images as evidence that Creighton threw an early curveball before William “Candy” Cummings, the figure more commonly associated with the pitch’s early history. That is a developed historical argument, but it remains an interpretation rather than an established identification.
There is no film, measured velocity, precise grip description, or complete record of Creighton’s mechanics. Even the alleged hidden wrist snap is a reconstruction from testimony, not an action that can now be observed. It would therefore be misleading to translate “twist” confidently into “curveball.” The claimed rising action does not establish a modern rising fastball, and the available descriptions cannot justify calling the pitch a four-seam fastball or any other current type.
The defensible conclusion is narrower but still important: Creighton delivered the ball with exceptional speed, control, deception, and apparent movement by the standards of his game. Exactly how the ball spun, how much it broke, and which modern label would fit it are unknowable.
From Brooklyn prospect to a nationally known Excelsior
Creighton’s documented life in baseball was extremely short, and even its opening sequence is not perfectly settled.
An archived Baseball History Blog index lists four claimed Brooklyn Eagle sightings of the 17-year-old with the Niagaras of Brooklyn: August 20, September 29, November 4, and November 20, 1858. It says he appeared at second and third base. The index does not reproduce the newspaper reports, so it establishes what the blog claimed in 2010 rather than supplying an independently verifiable game log.
From the Niagaras, Creighton progressed through the Stars and into the Excelsiors of Brooklyn, though surviving accounts vary slightly on club dates and whether another early affiliation belongs in the sequence. The broad path is clearer than every roster detail: he emerged from Brooklyn baseball and achieved his widest fame with the Excelsiors.
The Excelsiors’ multi-city tour in 1860 carried that fame beyond the local club scene. Its route included Albany, Buffalo, Philadelphia, Washington, and Baltimore, as well as stops in Canada and other locations.
Creighton was not merely a pitching specialist. Thorn reports that he scored 47 runs in 20 match games during 1860 and did not strike out. Accounts of his cricket career likewise portray an exceptional all-around athlete; one celebrated performance had him clean-bowling five wickets in six successive balls against an English side.
The same account credits Creighton with beginning what was once regarded as the first recorded triple play on September 22, 1860, and pitching an attributed first recorded shutout on November 8. “First recorded” is the essential qualification: it means the earliest example identified in surviving evidence, not proof that no similar play occurred in an unreported or lost game.
The numbers remain valuable as period evidence. They show why Creighton was admired as a hitter and pitcher rather than remembered for one novelty. They cannot support a direct comparison with present-day players because the rules, run environment, and completeness of the statistical record were different.
Claim versus evidence: separating influence from invention
Creighton’s reputation accumulated several attractive “firsts.” Some express his importance reasonably well; others turn a disputed interpretation into an apparent fact.

The professionalism claim is especially revealing. Reports of secret payment place Creighton near baseball’s transition away from formal amateurism, but concealment is precisely what makes “first professional” difficult to prove. A reported sum is not a surviving contract, nor can it establish that nobody else was paid earlier.
Similarly, “first superstar” captures the scale of his reputation without supplying a testable definition. It tells us how later writers understood his prominence, not that he won an official distinction.
The curveball claim has a narrower evidentiary problem: the movement may have been real, but the terminology is too imprecise to identify the pitch conclusively. Gilbert has argued that Creighton preceded other curveball candidates, while treating his paid status as a possibility rather than a settled fact.
Once those qualifications are applied, the central case remains intact. Creighton’s influence does not depend on winning every race to be first. The evidence is strongest where it describes what batters faced and how the pitcher’s strategic purpose changed.
The documented death and the fatal-home-run legend
James Creighton Jr. was born in Manhattan on April 15, 1841. He died in Brooklyn on October 18, 1862, at age 21, and was buried at Green-Wood Cemetery (SABR’s biographical and burial account).
Four days before his death, the Excelsiors defeated the Unions of Morrisania, 13–9, on October 14. The New York Times associated Creighton’s death with internal injuries sustained during that game, while the Boston Daily Advertiser reported that he burst a blood vessel while striking at a ball. Neither the surviving contemporary game reports nor those initial death notices substantiate the familiar story that he hit a home run and fatally ruptured himself during the swing.
The story grew in stages. An 1865 Brooklyn Daily Eagle account described Creighton making a forceful third swing, falling, recovering, and continuing to play—but it did not describe a home run. In 1887, conflicting versions appeared: an anonymous witness placed the rupture while Creighton was pitching, while Henry Chadwick connected the original injury to a cricket match five days before the baseball game. A far more dramatic home-run account appeared in teammate John Chapman’s recollection published in 1910, nearly half a century after Creighton’s death. SABR’s reconstruction shows how the later versions diverged from the limited contemporary record.
Three broad possibilities remain: an injury began in the baseball game; it began in the earlier cricket match and was aggravated during baseball; or an existing condition worsened during athletic activity. The surviving reports do not resolve the sequence.
Later medical interpretation has proposed that a chronic inguinal hernia trapped part of the intestine and cut off its blood supply, producing a strangulated intestine. That is a plausible retrospective reconstruction, not a diagnosis secured by a surviving medical record. Contemporary references to a ruptured bladder or blood vessel are likewise reports rather than definitive clinical findings (the medical reconstruction and its uncertainties).
Creighton’s death quickly became part of baseball folklore. His Excelsior teammates and members of the Union club jointly funded a memorial shaft at Green-Wood Cemetery, and his grave became a place of commemoration.
The legend’s dramatic power can obscure the firmer reason Creighton matters. His historical standing does not require a fatal home run, an undisputed curveball, or a collection of unchallengeable firsts. Under rules devised for cooperative delivery, he used speed, command, deception, and movement to make the pitcher an adversary. The disputed stories remain compelling, but the pitcher-batter duel he helped sharpen became baseball’s organizing struggle.
Is Jim Creighton in the Baseball Hall of Fame?
No. Jim Creighton is not an inducted member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Historian Thomas Gilbert has argued that Creighton’s influence merits induction, but his absence does not show that his historical importance has been disproved.
